Membership

Why does membership matter?

Church membership is more than church attendance. Church membership is a display of God’s design for the Church to live in unity and on mission together so that the world can see Him.

Church membership matters because it makes your commitment to Christ and His people visible, accountable, and intentional. It’s how Christians can corporately take spiritual responsibility for one another, grow together in faith, and live out the gospel in community as God’s Church.

Why is church membership important?
Church membership isn’t about jumping through religious hoops. It’s about shared responsibility. The church takes responsibility for the believer’s discipleship, and the believer commits to that church family in return. It’s an opportunity to give visible expression to our identity in Christ’s body.

Believers can only obey the majority of God’s new covenant commands through active membership in a local church. Here is a list of commands that are obeyed in the context of the local church: the “one-another” commands, taking communion in remembrance of Christ, singing spiritual songs to God, obeying your leaders, teaching and admonishing each other, and using your spiritual gifts and resources to edify the church. These examples show the importance of church membership.

Is choosing a church optional for a Christian?
While a Christian must personally choose to join a church, that doesn’t make the church optional. We believe that to follow Christ is to follow Him alongside His people. In other words, if you belong to Christ, you also belong to His Church. If you’ve been adopted by God, you are part of the family of God.
What actually happens when someone becomes a church member?
  • The church affirms the person’s faith and baptism as genuine.
  • The church commits to help that person grow in Christ through care, teaching, and accountability.
  • The person submits their discipleship to the church’s care, trusting its leadership and committing to live out their faith in that community.
How does the local church welcome new members?
The church essentially says, “We believe your profession of faith and baptism are real. We publicly recognize you as someone who belongs to Jesus, welcome you into our care and fellowship, and commit to sharing Christ to a lost world alongside you.” We help you integrate into our church family by connecting you to a group, a serve team, and one of our seven pastors for available elder care.
How do new members fold into this local church?
Through membership, the individual says, “Because I see this church as a faithful, gospel-teaching, gospel-sharing body, I commit to grow here, serve here, and follow Jesus with you under the lordship of Christ.” As soon as possible, they find their place in the body, stewarding their gifts, time, and resources through joining a small group, serve team, and outreach opportunities.
